One of the most important aspects of mirror match up design is trying to make multiple mid game armies viable - someone playing Ling/Muta against a Roach/Hydra player in ZvZ doesn't feel like a mirror match up, as you're using different unit sets and trying to take advantage of their different strengths. PvP feels like chaotic fun as we both throw random obnoxious bullshit at each other, while ZvP or TvP feels like trying to tiptoe around said obnoxious bullshit to get a win, or abuse obnoxious bullshit to cover for subpar T1 units (unless you can play like herO)). I actually enjoy both of those mirrors more than the other match ups involving Protoss (ZvP or TvP) (though as someone else suggested, I think this is more down to the design of Protoss. But I also feel like it's taken a long time to get here. I am a Random macro player in SC2, and to Blizzard's credit I actually enjoy ZvZ and PvP a lot - there is a lot of variety and opportunity for decision making/strategy/tactics/execution in real time in both match ups. I hope I don't have to pick my stormgate race based on which mirror matchups I hate the least. Many players in SC can't play their 'favorite' race because they hate the mirror or just do not play at all because of it. But this is important to focus on when 33% (or 25% for 4 races) of all the games your players are playing are mirrors. I have ideas on what to do or not but I'm sure a team can come up with better ones. The SC youtuber Lowko had a poll that 33,000 people took about their favorite mirror matchups to watch and only 6% picked 'ONE of the mirror matchups.' This number would absolutely be lower too if we went back in time and asked the casual fans who'e stopped watching imo.Ĭross matchups are pretty easy to keep fun. Not only are they not fun to play but generally much worse to watch. A lot of people just straight up leave mirror matchups on ladder or do some sort of cheese to get out as fast as possible which most don't consider fun. And TvT has been a 20 year unmoving siege line of frustration. PvP SC2 has been considered rock paper scissors for long periods. ZvZ in BW is basically not even a real RTS game. SC has been plagued by bad to mediocre mirror matchups. But the more i've thought about it the more I think mirror matchups need to be the forefront of design for each race. Because in SC it seems mirror matchups were just balanced as an afterthought. I've been wanting to make this thread for awhile and was originally going to say something along the lines of making sure mirror matchups were focused on just as much as cross matchups.
